Out of Block Lessons
In the final stages of scheduling a Sixth Form [Years/Grades 12/13] you may have to move individual lessons 'out of block' or OOB. This can help in solving problems in the Sixth Form.
For example:
Music may be in Block D on your 6th Form Curriculum Diagram ... but you find that you can't fit all the lessons within the time-slots used by the rest of the Block D subjects.
Suppose, by inspection, you find that because only a few students are studying Music this year, none of them is taking the subjects in Block A.
So one or more Music lessons could occur at the times when Block A is scheduled.
ie. they will be 'out of block' or 'OOB'.
How to do this in TimeTabler ?
A key point to remember is that the Music lesson can only fit into any of the Container Block A time-slots if it has a Container ID of 'A'.
So for the Music lesson(s) that you wish to move out of block you would need to change the Container ID for those Music lessons (only), from 'D' to 'A'.
This is discussed in another article in this KnowledgeBase, titled "Solving problems in the Sixth Form". [Use the Search Box to find it.]
And it is discussed in detail, with examples, in this PDF.
Notes:
--1) if you wish to change the Block-label for an activity, so it is different from its Container-ID, this needs to be done manually, as usually these two are kept the same. Follow these steps:
-- (i) double-click on the activity you want to move OOB, so that the pink "Details of Container" screen appears.
-- (ii) then change the "Block Label" to "?" ... "?" (question mark) has the special meaning that you can now set the Block labels differently for each activity in the Container Block.
-- (iii) Now you can go into "Curriculum Diagram -> List-view" and change the block-labels.
--2) to see how to export OOB lessons to your MIS, search on "OOB".
