Setting-up Rules in TOOLS
There are a few ways to set rules in TOOLS:
1) Use the 'CHOOSE ONE' Sections:
In the Admin Panel of TOOLS, you can set-up one or more 'CHOOSE ONE' Sections, which say that for their first choice, your students must choose one of the listed subjects ... similarly for their second choice, etc.
You can also (optionally) include a 'FREE CHOICE' of subject(s) at the end. Please ask for further details.
2) Informing the parents of any rule(s):
One way to let parents know of the rules is that you will see that there is a link on the screen the student/parent sees when making his/her choices which says: "Click here for course information".
If the parent clicks that link, they are taken to the web-page you entered earlier in Options (see 'Step 3' of the TOOLS Manual whose link was in my earlier email).
So you can set-up your own web-page, and include in it any information or links you like ... including links to documents about the courses on offer, important information about rules, etc.
(Note: if you don’t set-up your own link in Options then the parent will be taken to a dummy/sample HTML web-page that is included with our PHP files (called “courseinfo.html”) so another way of providing course information is simply to overwrite this file with one of your own, containing the required information or links).
3) In addition, you can add your own wording to the letters that go out to parents (with the username and passwords on). So you could put there "See the enclosed / attached sheet for rules on which choices you can make" (or something like that).
And you can also print one letter per A4 sheet, and then put those sheets through your printer or photocopier, so as to print your own message on the bottom half of the A4 sheet ... which could include any rules.
Again, you'll find details in the TOOLS Manual.
4) As for checking that a parent has followed the rules:
As you know, you can set-up choice rules in Options ... but we haven't found an easy way to implement these within TOOLS itself yet. So the parent's choices are not rule-checked when s/he enters them ... however, once you have imported the choices back into Options, you can of course click "Check Rules" on the Students screen and anyone who has broken the rules will then be highlighted for you.
But if you have any problems, let us know.
