Part-time Staff and Job-sharing : 18 Examples / Scenarios

Part-time Staff, Flexible Working, and Job-sharing : 18 Examples & Scenarios

> Overview:
Schools are increasingly looking for ways of developing more flexible working.  This usually involves employing Part-time staff, including teachers who 'Job-Share'.
Almost all timetables include Part-time teachers of one kind or another, and before you schedule, you will tell TimeTabler about the Availability of these Part-time staff.

Of course, Part-timers with limited availability are more difficult to timetable; they reduce your solution-space.   But they also bring benefits: offering flexible working to your staff can be a good way to increase staff morale, productivity and retention ... but you will not want to make promises that prove hard to keep - so you will want to investigate the possibilities, and their effects.  TimeTabler helps you to do this.

For a detailed Report on the employment and the timetabling of Part-timers, see here.

> 18 Worked Examples:
Click here to download the PDF with 18 practical worked examples or scenarios illustrating different kinds of Part-timers and Job-Shares.
This PDF looks at some Worked Examples, for you to compare with the situation in your school, to help you find the best method for dealing with your Part time staff.
Each scenario is explained with a suggestion of how to tackle it, either using the Staff Availability Screen or using Special Locations ('Homes').
Find the scenario nearest to what you want to timetable.   If none seems to match your situation, please ask us.

You will see that as well as part-time working and job-shares, there are other ways to offer your staff flexibility.  For example: allowing them to arrive and/or leave at times that better suit them ('staggered hours'), to fit their hours into fewer (longer) days ('compressed hours'), to prepare lessons or conduct admin tasks at home (perhaps attending meetings via remote working), etc.  A scenario that has been tried in a few schools is to lump together a person's PPA periods, to make (say) a half-day, when they could work at home.
