How do I deal with Double Subjects?

Double Subjects

Double Subjects (a double option) occur when students have to study a subject which spans over 2 option blocks (ie. with double the amount of time).

There are 3 steps you need to consider:

1.
On the Subjects Screen you will need to enter both components as separate subjects.
eg.  BTEC1 and BTEC2

2.
On the Students & Choices Screen, by clicking on the Rules button, you can enter a Rule which says:
"Students must choose BOTH subjects, as a pair, or neither."
This will check that your students do not choose just half of a double-subject.

3.
On the Design a Pattern Library Screen, by clicking on the Rules button, there are 2 Rules to help you:
(i)  "Subjects must NOT be in the same Block"
If the double-subject was BTEC1 and BTEC2, AND IF there is only one group for BTEC1 and one group for BTEC2 then this Rule will deal correctly with your data.

However, if for each of these subjects there are 2 teaching groups (called A and B in this example), then you need to ensure that the students are allocated consistently.
ie. Students in BTEC1-A should be in BTEC2-A (and none in BTEC2-B), and vice-versa.
To ensure this you need another Rule:
(ii)  "Students must be grouped consistently"
This will ensure that the BTEC1-A students are also in BTEC2-A.
And BTEC1-B students are in BTEC2-B.

Notes:

The same principles can be applied & extended if you have more than 2 teaching groups for a given subject/course.
eg. Diploma groups called: Dip1, Dip2, Dip3, Dip4.
See the separate article on this particular topic, by typing 'diploma' in the Search Box.

There are more details about using these Rules in other KnowledgeBase articles ...for example, type 'diploma' in the Search Box.
